A Wiki gives us the tools to inform and keep in touch...
We are an umbrella of many groups, We all share similar purposes in helping improve our healthy and communities through providing healthy choices for people. Those healthy choices often involve consuming food from our own local gardens and farms, stewardship of the land and animals that are part of our schools and communities. We need to stay in touch not only to support one another, but also to provide technical information and support ot our newer gardeners. A wiki provides the tools to help us stay intouch and have current information available to everyone. It allows you to change information or add information or delete it from a webpage without the cost of a web team. For example if you change leadership --- YOU can go in quickly to the members page and change the contact information for your group. You don't need to wait on anyone to do it for you. This video will help you grasp just some of the ways that a wiki can help us stay connected! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dnL00TdmLY
The most important thing
When you edit the wiki you may be tempted to add lots of bells and whistles. Remember to focus on the PURPOSE - to inform and update! Remember the KISS rule. Keep it simple stupid! Trust me you are going to be tempted to go crazy with all the fun things you can do --- when you want to do that -- please sign up for a wiki of your own. You can always place a link to it from our wiki! Here is an example of a wiki that went wild! https://westmeade.wikispaces.com/Mrs.+Nolte%27s+Class
Here are some links to help you get started and feeling comfortable about adding or editing content.
Of course you must be accepted as a Wiki Member before you can do this --- just like Wikipedia! But once you have the power, you need to know what do you do with it.
1. Don't make major changes to the structure of the entire Wiki without consulting several of the other wiki editors. You may control your groups Wiki page without such consultation. It is simply that big changes in organization can be frustrating for return visitors who are used to looking for things in one place --- remember how irritating it is when word goes through a new revision and you have to find something you know how to do, but it's location in the program has changed? Same thing here.
2. Know that nothing you do will destroy the wiki. One of the Organizers can get back to a previous version if you accidentally wipe out data.
Would someone bring a bucket?
I'll bring 500 buckets. :)
